The Boston Audio Society is hosting a seminar and demonstration on multi-channel Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) recording and post-production techniques and practices. The event will take place Wednesday April 23 at the Berklee College of Music in cooperation with the Boston Chapter of the Audio Engineering Society. The event will begin at 6:00 PM with refreshments and a demonstration of a superb a surround sound system. The listening and refreshments will occur in a studio inside their main performance center, 150 Mass Av, Studio A.

The Seminar will be held separately at a second Berklee site, 22 the Fenway, Room F12. It will start at 7:30 PM. It is about two easy walking blocks from Studio A. The Seminar will be conducted by engineers from Sound Mirror Inc. and by Paul Reynolds of Philips Super Audio in Holland. He is flying to the USA from Holland for this meeting. The seminar will provide a forum for questions. This is a rare opportunity for interested audio professionals to hear and explore the advances in sound reproduction made possible by SACD technology. Super Audio CD is a new format developed by Philips and Sony. It uses DSD (Direct stream digital) and a 4.7 GB disc with 2.8 MHz. The CD uses 16 bit PCM recording technology at a 44.1 kHz sampling rate. The frequency response of the CD is limited to 22.05 kHz and its dynamic range is limited to 96 dB. The SACD format uses 1-bit delta-sigma modulation and a sampling frequency that is 64 times higher than that of the CD. This enables the SACD format to offer a frequency response of 100 kHz and a dynamic range of 120 dB.

Special Thanks to Berklee for use of their rooms, B&W for supplying 5 of their top-of-the line speakers (801 Nautilus), Philips and Paul Reynolds for contributing demonstration material, and Taylor Sales for supplying the refreshments.
