John S. Allen & Alvin Foster - recording a concert: video & audio
lessons learned
Last June, BAS members John S. Allen and Alvin Foster,
with two assistants, did a three-camera video shoot of a concert by the
Joyful Voices of Inspiration, a Gospel choir, with a separate audio recording.
John has edited the recordings into a concert video.
The Joyful Voices will be performing again at 4 PM,
on Saturday, June 11 in the same venue, the First Parish Church, in Waltham
-- an opportunity to get to know the choir's live sound, the music and the
acoustics of the venue before our meeting. The Joyful Voices are a dynamic
group with a large acoustic sound and several fine soloists. Admission is
free.
Driving directions to First Parish Church are at http://tinyurl.com/3twccs6
. There is ample parking at the church or across Church Street. The church
is a two-block walk from the Waltham commuter rail station (Fitchburg line)
where the #70, 70A, and 554 MBTA buses also stop.
The BAS meeting feature on the 12th will be a discussion
of what John and Alvin learned by producing the video -- preparation of
the venue, acoustics, lighting, miking, camera placement, audio/video perspective
issues, synchronization of the separate recordings, video editing issues
and much more. Alvin will give a demonstration of post-production directivity
adjustment of the SoundField microphone that he used for the recording.
Segments of the video will be shown. We will also to have a representative
of the choir to discuss the performance and the recording from a musician's
viewpoint.
There will be refreshments at 5:30.
