Featured: Sony 4K Ultra HD projector,
LGs 84 Ultra HD 240Hz 3D LED TV, and 3-D Audio.
Topics: Auditioning the newest surround,
height channels - Dolby Atmos & 3D-Auro
Our May meeting will be held at the
home of Richard Goldwater, long-time BAS member and former
co-host of Shop Talk. At the meeting, Dr. Goldwater will
demonstrate the latest two instantiations of home 3D Audio:
Dolby Atmos, and the Auro system, especially as they work
from two-channel sources. We also expect to sample 4K video
as streamable from Netflix, Amazon, and SONY, as well as
the Atmos-enabled, Blu Ray disc of Gravity. We are hoping
for a guest appearance by Peter Tribeman of Atlantic Sound,
who knows as much about Atmos as anybody in New England,
and has consulted to Dolby on the subject.
Dolby
Atmos is the name of a surround
sound technology announced by Dolby Laboratories in
April 2012. An Atmos demo disc demonstrates its object-based
rendering, which includes utilizing speakers for height.
Auro-3D
also features the playback of 3D audio content. Its proper
use requires encoded content, of which none is available,
but its use of height channels adds a wonderful wrinkle
in time to ancient mono recordings.
Attendees are welcome to bring CDs or
Mp3s of music to audition
