1. Ed Dell died February 25, 2013
at the age of 90. A guru for the do-it-yourself movement in the stereo
component field, Mr. Dell launched Audio Amateur magazine in the early
1970s, later Glass Audio, Speaker Builder and AudioXpress (also Computer
Smyth for people who wanted to build their own computers). He was editor
for some 600 authors.
The genesis of Audio Amateur was the infamous "construction
issue" of J. Gordon Holt's Stereophile. There was a storm of protest
from readers that wanted reviews, not DIY, (that topic was never brought
up again) but apparently enough people responded positively that he
did an 80,000 piece mailing and then launched AA.
