April 2006 Meeting
Date: Tuesday,
April 11, 2006
Time: 7:00 PM
Place: Critical Listening Classroom, Durgin Hall, Room 114, University of
Massachusetts Lowell, 35 Wilder Street, Lowell, MA 01854
Featured Guest: Robert Crowley of Soundwave Research
Topic: The new Crowley and Tripp Ribbon Microphones
Robert J. Crowley (Bob) is the cofounder of Soundwave
Research Laboratories Inc, of Ashland, MA --a medical instrument developer
located in the same facility as Crowley and Tripp Microphones. Bob has designed
transducers for ultrasonic and sonic applications, and has over 100 US and
foreign patents and patent applications, mainly in fields relating to imaging,
sensors, and nanotechnology. In this presentation, Bob will talk about design
goals and methods his group uses to improve the sound quality of microphones.
Examples will include some of Bob's laboratory findings and recent inventions
in ribbon microphones.
There will be a detailed look at how the design goals
are being implemented at Crowley and Tripp, as well as a close up look at
new carbon nanotube array transducers being developed by Soundwave Research
Laboratories.
Note that there will be no open forum, only a brief
time for announcements, since this is an AES sponsored meeting.
