Topic: Tribute to Roy Allison, AES
convention report
The Sunday BAS meeting will devote a
portion of its time to remembering our old friend the acoustics
researcher and loudspeaker designer Roy Allison, who died
in NH last week, at age 88. Allison's career arc began as
a naval electronics instructor as a wartime teenager to
engineering journalism through engineering VP for AR to
establishing his own speaker companies. He wrote lay audio
guides and professional research articles on listening room
acoustics that are anthologized references. He was a regular
participant in BAS activities, from introducing the Allison
One in the mid-1970s to various factory visits and panel
discussions in the decades thereafter, culminating in a
sendoff dinner when he moved to Florida. His intellect,
prose precision, dry wit, research interests, engineering
creativity and invention, and inordinate gentlemanliness
in a mean industry served, and serve, as examples to all
of us.
