The Library of Congress announced that tapes
bearing nearly an hour of the Thelonius Monk quartet with John Coltrane
were found in January. These tapes came from a concert at Carnegie
Hall on Nov. 29, 1957, a benefit for a community center. The concert
was recorded by the Voice of America and also incudes sets by the
Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, Ray Charles, and the Sonny Rollins Trio.
The music was discovered by accident during routine transfer of
analog tapes to digital; the tape was marked "sp. Event 11/29/57
carnegie jazz concert (#1)" with no names on it. The VOA was
allowed to record free of charge as long as it broadcast only overseas;
this was regarded as diplomacy through music. NYT 25Ap05
